NOVOUKRAINKA, KAZAKHSTAN – CONVICTION FOR EVANGELISM
In August 2014 a group of evangelists was arrested in Aityrau District of North Kazakhstan Region (Republic of Kazakhstan) and their religious books were confiscated.
On 19.12.2014 N.K. Nuralin, Judge of Aityray District Court of North Kazakhstan Region, examined Case №3-684/2014 regarding Brother Maxim Volikov and established that “on 21.08.2014 citizen M.M. Volikov, acting in violation of section 2 of Article 9 of the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan on Religious Activities and Religious Associations which allows to distribute religious literature only in the buildings designated for religious services and in the specialized premises, was illegally distributing various items of religious literature in the central part of the village of Novoukrainka”.
Maxim Volikov was adjudged guilty under Article 375 of Part 1 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Republic of Kazakhstan (Violation of the requirements for the distribution of religious literature established under the legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan) and was sentenced to an administrative fine of 92,600 tenge (500 US Dollars) and a suspension of his religious activities for the period of three months.
Under the court decision, all confiscated books were placed in the custody of the Department for Religious Affairs of North Kazakhstan Region.
Maxim disagreed with this decision. He intends to appeal against it and asks for your prayers and petitions for the freedom of Evangelism in Kazakhstan, as well as for the reversal of the court decision and the return of the confiscated books.
